The Model – After the end of WWII, Willys-Overland Corporation cashed in on their biggest contribution to the war effort with civilian production of the Jeep. In 4x4 form, it proved it could go almost anywhere, and while the 4X4 versions were popular, a less expensive DJ3A model was developed with only rear-wheel drive capabilities. Again the government saw the advantage to this model and ordered 1,000’s of the DJ3A as a postal delivery vehicle. When that initial contract ran out in 1959, Willys decided to use up leftover parts for a limited edition Gala Surrey. However, the demand for these from resort businesses, hotels and rental car agencies meant this attractive little roadster would stay around until 1964. Available in just a few color selections such as pink or turquoise with white trim, they became a familiar sight at venues such as Caribbean islands and locales like Hawaii.

The Car – One look at this Gala Surrey and only the coldest of hearts wouldn’t melt. This Gala was given a complete and beautiful restoration about 3 years ago. With an eye for authenticity, the proper Turquoise finish with correctly applied white trim was achieved. Only one source for the original style soft-trim materials still exists and again a perfect match with the original hues was found, complete down to the fringe for the top. Mechanically the little Hurricane-4 engine was rebuilt as were all chassis components including the brake system. During its hey-day, Surreys found their way into several motion pictures including Jerry Lewis’s hilarious comedy The Nutty Professor. Even Elvis Presley had one that was used at his Graceland Estate. You don’t have to be a movie star to own this Gala, you just need to have a little “look at me” in you when you drive it home. As an unbiased auction company we are very apprehensive to give a 1 overall rating for overall condition report but this perfect vintage Willys deserves nothing less.
